Novel
tersebut sangat legendaris dan menjadi salah satu novel terpopuler sepanjang
masa. Tepat 76 tahun lalu, 3 Mei 1937, Gone with the Wind memenangkan
hadiah Pulitzer. Novel ini berkisah tentang seorang perempuan pemberontak dari
Georgia bernama Scarlett O’Hara di zaman Perang Saudara di AS. Ceritanya
menarik karena menjalin hubungan cerita antara O’Hara dengan sahabat, keluarga,
dan kekasihnya.
Margaret
lahir pada 8 November 1900 di Atlanta, Georgia. Ayahnya seorang jaksa sehingga
keluarganya termasuk berkecukupan. Saat ia berusia tiga tahun roknya tersangkut
di besi pemanggang sampai roknya terbakar. Takut kejadian serupa terulang sang
ibu memutuskan Margaret kecil tak lagi memakai rok, tetapi mengenakan celana
layaknya anak laki-laki dan mendapat panggilan Jimmy. Margaret tetap menjadi “Jimmy”
hingga usia 14 tahun.
Margaret
sudah mencintai buku sejak kecil bahkan ia bercita-cita jadi penulis. Sewaktu
kecil buku koleksinya ia lapisi dengan cover buatannya sendiri. Ketika
remaja ia sudah menulis novel. Lost Laysen, yang ditulis ketika ia berusia
16 tahun, diberikan pada seorang teman lelakinya. Sayang novel itu hilang.
Tetapi bisa ditemukan tahun 1994 dan diterbitkan tahun 1996, setelah Margaret
meninggal tahun 1949.
Novel
lainnya seperti The Big Four dan Ropa Carmagin tak sempat
diterbitkan. The Big Fournaskahnya hilang sebelum diajukan ke penerbit,
sedangkan Ropa Carmagin ditolak penerbit saat ia mengirimkannya
bersama-sama naskah Gone with the Wind.
Pembuatan
Gone with the Wind sendiri berlangsung pada pertengahan tahun 1920-an
ketika ia harus keluar sebagai wartawan Atlanta Journal karena cedera
kaki. Ia tinggal di rumah sambil membaca banyak buku dan menulis kolom untuk Sunday
Magazine. Namun suatu kali suaminya John Marsh, menuliskan sebuah pesan
pendek di secarik kertas. Ia merasa jemu karena harus sering membantu istrinya
mengambilkan buku-buku di perpustakaan sampai buku-bukunya berserakan. “Peggy
(nama panggilan Margaret), tak bisakah kamu menulis buku ketimbang membaca
ribuan buku ini?” Tak lupa ia pun menghadiahi istrinya sebuah mesin tik.
Tiga
tahun kemudian lahirlah Gone with the Wind yang terkenal itu. Novel ini
satu-satunya novel yang bisa diterbitkan selama ia masih hidup. Namun itu cukup
membuat Margaret Mitchell terkenal hingga sekarang dan meraih banyak
penghargaan.
Quite A Novel for Popular All Time
The
novel is legendary and became one of the most popular novels of all time.
Exactly 76 years ago, May 3, 1937, Gone with the Wind won a Pulitzer Prize.
This novel is about a rebellious girl from Georgia named Scarlett O'Hara in the
Civil War in the United States. The story is interesting because the
relationship between O'Hara stories with friends, family, and her lover.
Margaret
was born on November 8, 1900 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a prosecutor
so that his family included wealthy. When he was three years old her skirt
caught in the iron grills up her skirt on fire. Fear of recurrence mother
decided little Margaret is no longer wearing a skirt, but wearing pants like
boys and Jimmy gets a call. Margaret remains a "Jimmy" until the age
of 14 years.
Margaret
had loved the books since childhood even he aspired to be a writer. As a small
collection of books he seal with a homemade cover. As a teenager he was writing
a novel. Lost Laysen, written when he was 16 years old, was given to a male
friend. Dear novel was missing. But it can be found in 1994 and published in
1996, after Margaret died in 1949.
Other
novels such as The Big Four and Ropa Carmagin not been published. The Big
Fournaskahnya lost before it is submitted to a publisher, while publishers
rejected Ropa Carmagin when he sends it together manuscript of Gone with the
Wind.
Making
of Gone with the Wind itself took place in the mid 1920s when he had come out
as a journalist for the Atlanta Journal because of a foot injury. He stayed at
home and read a lot of books and writes a column for the Sunday Magazine. But
once her husband John Marsh, write a short message on a piece of paper. He felt
tired, as she often helped her get the books in the library until his books
scattered about. "Peggy (Margaret nickname), can not you write a book
rather than read thousands of books this?" Do not forget he also presented
his wife a typewriter.
Three
years later born Gone with the Wind is famous for. The novel is the only novel
to be published while he was still alive. But it was enough to make known to
the Margaret Mitchell now and won many awards.
